Production of Drama about Health, Social and physiological problems of FGM and the importance of its eradication.

Background:

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a human rights violation, an extreme form of gender inequality and harmful to women’s lives. It has been recognized within international human rights instruments as child abuse and violence against women and girls. FGM involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia and includes any other injury on the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Today, more than 200 million girls and women have undergone FGM around the globe. FGM is carried out on girls between infancy and the age of 15, most commonly before puberty starts. It has long term consequences on physical and mental health, including infections, childbirth, fistulae, chronic pain and haemorrhage. It also increases the risk of HIV transmission, birth complications and infertility. Progress has been made in reducing the number of girls at risk of FGM, but there is still much to do to eliminate this practice.

Network against FGM/C in Somaliland (NAFIS) is a non-political, non-governmental and humanitarian network. NAFIS was established in late 2006 in Hargeisa by some local NGOs working towards the eradication of FGM/C. Currently, NAFIS has a membership of 20 organizations operating in all the regions of Somaliland.
