Somalia’s livestock sector is recovering from the setback inflicted by the chaos and disruption that resulted from the collapse of the central government of Somalia. The war devastated most of the important infrastructures and resources that could support the sector to flourish. The most affected includes institution that provided extension services, policy and regulatory bodies, and human resources. This capitalized as deterrence to local economic growth, investors, and poor environment to trust with investments.
Besides that, investing the productive sectors requires large capital investments and commitment from the investors as well as healthy and safe environment that can protect the investors assets and interest. However, there are some indicators of systemic recovery in the country, which boost the morale of both the local communities to invest larger productive projects in Somalia. such projects include dairy farming, beekeeping, honey and dairy processing, animal feed industry and modern slaughterhouses.
Besides that, there are constraints and inhibitory factors that straddle women and youth to convert their business and income generating ideas and dreams into reality. Such constraints include lack of capital startups and the inaccessibility to micro-financial institution due to the tough requirements to fulfill before accessing micro-finance institutions, the small amount allowed to finance youth lead business. With such inherent challenges youth and women cannot venture such larger project that require such large capitals.
However, majority of the women and youth resorted to go into the informal business-like Beekeeping and honey trade which does not require much large capital investments but will effectively contribute to their livelihoods as well as the growth of the economy of Somalia and create jobs for youth and women.
Beekeeping is one of the most important activities to strengthen livelihoods. It is the ideal livelihood activities for the poor and in particular, the land less as these requires small capital startups, simple tools and technologies. It uses and creates diverse livelihood asset to poor and vulnerable communities and households. Beekeeping has the potential to contribute directly or indirectly to household income and the general economy of nations. Beekeeping as a new livelihood activities or restoration of livelihoods, fits well in the arid regions like Somalia where there are limited livelihood activities due to scarcity of water resources and fertile land. it also works well alongside other livelihood actives like crop production, environmental conservation, forestry,
and wood farms. Beekeeping contributes to the general wellbeing of poor communities by providing economic, nutritional, and ecological benefit. It is a potential sector to generate income and increase employment specifically to youth and women.
Bee keeping and honey production continues to increase as there is increased consumption of honey for it is medicinal value, cosmetics, and lightening. There is still demand gap for honey waxes and propolis in the world.
A recent value chain analysis conducted by Save the Children through independent consultancy firm on honey value chains has identified the constraints inhibiting the sectors growth and these are: Lack of technical skills, poor branding, and marketing techniques, lack and poor technologies of honey processing, lack of modern beehives, poor association, and cooperatives.
