THET’s specific role has been to support the Somaliland Government and regulators to improve
the policy and regulation of higher medical education.
The National Harmonized Medical Curriculum has been developed and agreed through
consensus meetings of decision makers and leaders in health and higher education. The
stakeholders agreed that health training institutions and clinical teaching facilities need to meet
quality standards if they are to produce doctors competent to apply their skills and learning to
meet the health needs of people in Somaliland. The content of the medical programmes taught
should be directly relevant to the health needs of the people of Somaliland and appropriate to
the context in which doctors will practice. The stakeholder meeting agreed on the need for
review of the medical curriculum and proposed standards based on World Federation for
Medical Education (WFME) standards which are globally recognized and appropriate to the
Somaliland context.
During 2019, stakeholders from the medical schools in Somaliland contributed to the design
and content of the National Harmonized Curriculum and participated in formulating its mission
and educational outcomes. This Harmonized Curriculum has been designed according to the
‘Basic Medical Education WFME Global Standards for Quality Improvement, 2017’. The
curriculum, syllabus and intended learning outcomes have been completed.
