Job Description
SOS Children’s Villages invites applications from suitably qualified and interested candidates who fulfill the eligibility criterion for Volunteer Doctor, obstetrics and gynaecology (OBS/GYN).
Position Title : VOLUNTEER DOCTOR, OBS/GYN (5 positions)
Reporting to : Doctor in Charge (OBS/GYN)
Location : Heliwa
Supervisees : Non
Position Summary:
Under the guidance of senior doctors in the OBS/GYN department, the volunteer doctor will learn how to provide holistic health and nutrition care to women, newborn and their families.
Main Purpose:
The volunteer doctor will learn diagnostic procedures and women’s management under the department’s senior doctors’ direction. The volunteer will learn how to treat and care for women and newborns using Somalia Standard Treatment guidelines. The position’s main objective is to provide learning opportunities in providing management of AMTSL, postpartum care, newborn care, resuscitation of women and newborns, infection prevention and control, assist in CEMONC services, and document all care provided. Under the s senior doctor’s supervision, the position holder will contribute to all preventive, promotive and curative health services.
Priority Task and Responsibilities:
Learn how to:
- Attend duties allocated in all departments’ e.g. antenatal clinic, antenatal ward, postnatal ward, delivery and operation theater.
- Diagnose and treat patients under supervisor
- Ensure duties and functions are undertaken
- Initiate and monitor treatments assigned by the supervisor.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests with consultation of your supervisor.
- Assess patients on admission and discharge as required and write detailed reports
- Communicate effectively with the patient and client
- Seek advice and assistance from the consultant
- Contributing clinical expertise to patient care and providing guidance to junior interns.
- Ensuring the highest standards in patient care are maintained.
- Verifying complex diagnoses and facilitating treatment plans under supervision.
- Supervising, and mentoring healthcare professionals and collaborating with consultants.
- Managing allocated duties and identifying areas of improvement in inpatient care.
- Keeping informed on advancements in the field and contributing to medical research programs.
- Ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards.
- Reporting to senior doctors, as well as communicating between medical staff.
- Ensuring consistent and accurate medical recordkeeping practices.
- Cover occasionally unplanned absence of colleagues
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Perform Referral services for complicated cases with your supervisor
- Assist to conduct ward rounds in all departments
- Assist in review frequently severe cases admitted in the wards
- Assist night duty staff in providing patient care
- Consult with a doctor in charge of all complicated cases
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery
- Good counseling and communication skills
- Observing client confidentiality and privacy
- Good experience in BEMONC & CEMONC Able to provide Basic Life Support to women and newborns
Personal Qualities & Attributes:
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure
- A good communicator with other midwives, doctors, support staff, individuals, families and Para patients.
- Very good organization skills
- Team player
- Able to work with minimal supervision
