DEPARTMENT/COUNTRY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION/MISSION
The overall objective of the Alight’s Horn of Africa program is to prevent death and alleviate human suffering among affected internally displaced persons (IDPs) in settlements and host communities where we work. Alight is implementing WASH, Health, Nutrition Protection, and Education activities in South Central Somalia and Health, Nutrition, protection, and WASH program in the Sool region of Somaliland responding to the plight of droughts and conflict-affected communities in the country. Alight is taking a multi-sectoral approach in responding to the severe drought conditions through a range of activities including Health, Relief Commodities, and WASH.
The Horn of Africa Program of the Alight has fully-fledged offices in Mogadishu, Kismayo, Dhobley, Afmadow, Hargeisa, and Laas Canood in Somaliland, Addis Ababa, Jigjiga, and Mekele in Ethiopia besides a liaison office in Nairobi, Kenya. Alight is working closely with national and regional authorities and with a number of Horn of Africa-based international and national organizations to galvanize coordinated lifesaving humanitarian assistance to the people in need.
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Water monitor will be under the direct supervision of the WASH officer, the holder of this position will be responsible for water quality testing, monitoring, sampling, and sanitary inspection and chlorination of water supplies ensuring that water provided to beneficiaries is safe for consumptions. He or she is also required to train water management committees, communities, and other stakeholders on the treatment of water at the source level and point of use.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Support Chlorination of water supplies with the required amount of chlorine to attain the required FRC at the fetching point.
Develop water testing procedures and direct activities of water quality operators both in the field and in the laboratories.
Collect samples, conduct instant field tests and laboratory tests, and prepare reports, summaries, or charts

that interpret test results.
Calibrate field equipment and verify data collected from the field.
Identify gaps & give recommendations to control or eliminate unsafe conditions at water sources, tap-stands or water kiosks and at households that are potential sources of water contamination
Train Water User Committees on the simple ways of ensuring water quality at the source and simple water chlorination methods.
Support in the registration of beneficiaries of water trucking
Preparing daily progress update on water trucking to ensure that the target beneficiaries are reached
Support the promotion of water quality hygiene measures in the target communities.
Participate in the compilation of quality monthly, quarterly and final WASH project reports.
Coordinate with other partners and all stakeholders on matters pertaining to water quality safety, hygiene, and identification of gaps.
Lead on the distribution of household water treatment tablets like aqua tabs, water makers, etc to the project beneficiaries and also supporting educating beneficiaries on the correct and consistent usage of the water treatment products.
Assist the WASH teams in surveys and other assessments in the project area when required.
EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
A laboratory technician’s Diploma or Water resource management, water engineering from a recognized college/ technical institute.
At least 2 years of hands-on experience in a similar position with a credible organization or government institution.
Proven experience in conducting water chlorination and field water quality testing using equipment like Delagua Kit.
The ability to read and interpret gauges and other measuring devices is required for this job.
Skilled at using chemicals and other additives to test water samples and make adjustments as necessary to guarantee its safety and the quality of taste and smell.
She/he has to have the knowledge and expertise to adjust chemical levels and remove harmful bacteria and organisms to make the water drinkable and visually appealing.
The job requires her/him to be informed of local and regional water quality standards and make sure they are consistently met.
Proficient in the use of computers, able to use – Microsoft Word and Excel. Should be conversant with the use of internet and email systems.

Should be able to live, work and travel in an insecure environment, following strict security guidelines at all times.
Proven capacity to work in a quickly moving, unstable situation and work against targeted outputs with tight time frames and deadlines.

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing in English and Somali Language.
